The National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taiwan is a cultural, educational, and social venue. Here, visitors learn about Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. History enthusiasts, architecture buffs, and cultural explorers should visit.
Don’t confuse this with the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou, China.
Unlike the Taipei memorial, Guangzhou’s Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall focuses solely on Dr. Sun’s life and legacy. Taipei’s version also functions as a vibrant social hub, hosting art exhibitions and cultural events, appealing to a broader audience.
However, the one in Taipei also offers a lot of memorabilia to give you a peek into Sun Yat-Sen’s life.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall (SYS) doesn’t offer any parking spaces. You must park at the Zhongshan Mall or other nearby garages and lots. Whenever it opens, the Taipei Dome will have an underground parking lot, which sits across the street from SYS.
Things to do in Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
Here’s what to do throughout the following areas:
- Memorial Hall:
- Central Hall: Watch the changing of the guard.
- History Exhibition Rooms: Showcases Sun Yat-Sen’s political & personal life.
- Galleries: 8 galleries feature contemporary & traditional Taiwanese art.
- Auditorium: Often hosts events like the Golden Horse Awards & Golden Bell TV Awards.
- Gardens & parks: Admire the architecture, foliage, & flowers.
- It’s a relaxing place to visit at night.
The changing of the guards at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall occurs every day at every hour between 9 AM and 5 PM. The change will last for 7 minutes.
Standing on the first floor will give you the best view of the ceremony, but it’s often packed with people. If you don’t care about getting pictures, I recommend venturing to the second floor for a better view.
The Memorial Hall has a single café, making it an unideal place to get food. Once the Taipei Dome across the street opens, I’d imagine they’ll have a food court. Otherwise, explore the surrounding area for better food choices.
How to Get to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
The best way to get to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is by taking the Taipei subway Blue line to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station. Leave the station from Exits 3 or 4. Going through Exit 1 will take you to the Taipei Dome and requires crossing the street to the Memorial Hall.
Or you could take the Taipei City bus to these stations:
- MRT Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
- Dr. Sun Yat-Sen memorial Hall
The bus taken will depend on where you’re departing from. I can’t help you here.
Taiwan offers a bicycle rental service known as YouBike. Rent one of these and drop it off at any of the docking bays surrounding the Memor
